Philip: “We’re dropping a single today, Weds, June 3. It’s called ‘Golden Waves’. Flora and I put this one together ourselves (like Echolalia; we’ll be joining Max, Dave and Dennis later this year for something new. That’s a promise.)

“It’s a kind of upbeat number, and we have mixed feelings about releasing an energetic, summery song during these days of such strife, pain and uncertainty the likes of which some of us have never known. The fact remains, however, that what we are all feeling right now is something huge swaths of the population have had to experience all their lives: dread, uncertainty, the denied promise of liberties we take for granted.

“But the song itself, I have to say, is about joy. That is not a well I usually go to for songwriting. I’m fully capable of feeling it, but I don’t usually need to sing about it. The unique joy inside the song, which was written before all this, is about dissolving, losing one’s-self, daresay disappearing. And now in a world where many of us actually feel like we are disappearing, I’m pausing to reflect on what disappearing can mean.

“For some, it may be a relief: letting go of the hyperactive, critical self, the agonizing attachments of the world. For others who have been begging to be seen their whole lives, disappearing is no relief; it’s their greatest fear. This painful paradox is baked into the song.

lyrics

I feel like I’ve been sleeping forever. No nothing, no one, no word, no never. But these golden waves, golden waves wash over me, wipe clean my every memory. White hot’s the filament filling my speeding eyes. Hush, now – you’re free, just empty scribbles in diaries. Walked out the door of the castle in your perfect disguise. I feel like I’ve been walking for ages, salt water soaking through all the pages, and these golden waves, golden waves wash over me, wipe clean my every memory. White hot’s the filament filling my speeding eyes. Hush, now – you’re free, just empty scribbles in diaries. Walked out the door of the castle in your perfect disguise.
